The Seven Caves, By Name

The tours call it the seven-caves line, and the names are half the fun. From the Cave Store end heading north, the roll call.

The roll call

Sunny Jim is the celebrity: the largest cave, named by the Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum for a cereal mascot he thought the silhouette resembled, and the only one with a land entrance. A tunnel hand-dug in 1902 drops 145 steps from the Cave Store on Coast Boulevard; admission runs about $10–13 at the door, no booking needed. It’s the answer for grandparents, toddlers and anyone who wants a sea cave with dry shoes.

Clam’s Cave shows the classic double-mouth arch you’ve seen on postcards; it’s the one visible from the road above. Arch Cave is the deep one kayaks slide into when the surge allows. Sea Surprize (the spelling is the tradition) hides a skylight glow. Shopping Cart and Little Sister are the small pair guides use to read the day’s swell. White Lady, at the line’s end, wears the guano paint that named it.

What “entering” actually means

The mouths breathe with the swell, so which caves a tour enters is a daily decision, not a menu promise. Calm mornings might thread four or five; a surging afternoon might mean bows-in at two while the guide talks the group through the rest from outside. Nobody serious guarantees all seven, and a guide who reads the surge well is most of what the tour price buys.

Geology in one paragraph

The caves are wave-cut hollows in 75-million-year-old sandstone, still growing by inches a century as the Pacific works the point. The cliffs above them hold the cormorant colonies and the sea lion haul-outs that turn the paddle into a wildlife trip; all of it sits inside the marine reserve, so the rule on the water is the same as under it: look, don’t touch.
